The action is just as great as it was in the main game, but, in the end, I can only recommend the Zodiac Tournament to those who really just want to spend more time with Sleeping Dogs. And clocking in at around an hour makes the whole thing feel like a rushed, missed opportunity it would have been nice to see the story be built on more, as well as some of the characters and their backgrounds. In the end, the Zodiac Tournament Pack just doesn’t offer up enough new, or interesting content to appeal to people who have already gone off and found new things to fill their time with. After all of it is done, you can explore the island, replay missions, and collect any of the Fire Opal Statues you may have missed - there are also two new outfits you’ll be able to wear. Don’t get me wrong, the action is as great as it ever was, but the story is what will let you down. It does stop for a moment in the middle to mix things up with more story nonsense, but it’s short-lived and not particularly interesting. It mostly goes from a running sequence and a fight, to another running sequence and another fight. This shows some promise, but what comes after doesn’t follow up with anything even close to as interesting.
The DLC starts off with some preliminary story nonsense, then drops you into a pretty interesting moment where you’re able to go and talk to some of the fighters in the tournament.
The story doesn’t get much deeper than that without me spoiling it, so I’ll just dive right into what it is you do on Zodiac Island. Wei Shen is invited to an illegal martial arts tournament where the richest people in Asia bet millions of dollars on a number of fighters. The new filter, music, and sounds they’ve applied to the gameplay are fantastic - the hits you land have a nice crack to them that are very reminiscent of old martial arts films. First off, the entirety of this pack is stylized incredibly well.
